At the request of UNEP, the oil and gas industry launches IPIECA as the only global association on environmental issues involving both the upstream and downstream industry.
IPIECA organises a major seminar for its members, UNEP, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the World Health Organisation (WHO), the Scientific Committee on Problems of the Environment (SCOPE) and the Commission of the European Communities (CEC).

Global Industry Response Group (GIRG) is formed. As an outcome IPIECA
and OGP form the Oil Spill Response Joint Industry project, which
manages GIRG’s recommendations.
Supply chain task force formed.
Launch of The IPIECA Business and Human Rights Project and the Implementation Guidance Tool for the voluntary principles on security and human rights.
IPIECA holds a side-event at Rio+20 titled, ‘The oil and gas industry and sustainable development’. IPIECA and OGP launch a series of factsheets looking at the contribution the industry makes to sustainable development.
